Hi guys!

Today marks to end of our Multi-Disciplinary Project module, and it also means the end of my journey in Singapore Polytechnic.

The poster session was very intimidating, yet enriching as I got to see my fellow peers with their own projects!

Here are some pictures that we took during the event!

There are so many things I have learned throughout this project. Software such as Adobe Illustrator, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Media Encoder, Autodesk Inventor, Autodesk 3ds Max, Creo Illustrate, and most important, Vuforia Studio are self-taught and learned while creating DEVIANT. Some of the skills we picked up were computer programming in Javascript, 2D, and 3D graphics design, and video editing.

To summarize our project, and what we have achieved over the past 22 weeks -

DEVIANT is an Augment Reality experience that helps beginners to operate the CNC Milling Machine. It met the requirements of the stakeholders.

AR technology serves as an effective method for teaching and learning. When applied in schools, it will be able to enhance learning experiences of students and will eventually give them the knowledge to allow them to be able to operate the machine independently.

Two experiments were conducted to enhance the learning process for the students. It was deduced that using an iPad and .fbx file, exported from Autodesk 3Ds Max, delivers the best results. The iPad offers a variety of features that create an intriguing environment for the students to learn. Additionally, the .fbx files provide a faster rate of detection which speeds up the mundane lessons.

To maintain an organized and clean environment in the workshop, a workstation is created. The workstation is crafted in a way whereby the students are able to maintain cleanliness in the workshop as well as learn the name of the tools while using them.

However, much work and improvements have to be made to the existing version of DEVIANT as some vital aspects do not meet the users’ needs.

Such as -

In summary, I hope to apply the skills I have learned to my next milestone, which I will be pursuing a Bachelor degree in Computer Science, and I hope to also broaden my professional network further. I hope to have the opportunity to meet you in the future, and maybe hear your thoughts on AR.

Thank you once again for taking the time to follow us on this adventure! Best of luck in your future endeavors!

The team is on track for the completion of our project, Digital Visualisation [AR] for CNC Milling Machine. Through this project, the team has gained an abundance of knowledge, mostly self-taught. We have managed to meet the requirements of our stakeholders. One of which we needed to fulfill was to create an AR experience that helps beginners to operate the CNC Milling Machine.

In the duration of this project, we have discovered that AR serves as an effective method for teaching. With this technology applied in schools, we hope to enhance learning experiences of students and eventually give them the knowledge to allow them to be able to operate the machine independently. We came up with the name DEVIANT for our experience. We began our project by exploring the different softwares available and progressed towards creating an AR experience that was simple to use and intuitive. We have discovered that different software serves different purposes and we were given the opportunity to optimise each software to the fullest of its abilities.

The team went through relatively slow progress in the midst of this project as we faced a few obstacles that we eventually managed to overcome by conducting multiple experiments to justify the logic behind the finalised decision. Two experiments were conducted:

  1. Comparing various devices and

  2. Comparing the detection rate of two different files.

From the above experiments, we deduce that using an iPad and .fbx file, exported from Autodesk 3Ds Max, delivers the best results.

To maintain an organised and clean environment in the workshop, a workstation is created. The workstation is crafted in a way whereby the students are able to maintain cleanliness in the workshop as well as learn the name of the tools whilst using them.

Taking up this project gave us many opportunities. We participated in recognised events, such as Singapore Polytechnic Engineering Show 2019 (SPES), and we were given the chance to showcase our project to companies such as Yamazaki Mazak Singapore Pte Ltd and Advanced Remanufacturing and Technology Center (ARTC). We have gained such great experience that we would have not encountered within a classroom setting.

However, much work and improvements have to be made to the existing version of DEVIANT as some vital aspects do not meet the users’ needs.

  1. The limitations of using a tablet to view the AR experience instead of the 3D glasses, such as the Microsoft HoloLens, restrict the users’ hands.

  2. The alignment of the GUI does not fit in other devices apart from the iPad.

  3. Images imported from Vuforia Studio would result in the display overlapping.

Above all, this project has shaped the team to become better people, engineers, and designers too. This project allowed us to explore what is beyond our field of study in electrical and electronic engineering and gave us a platform to display our potential to the fullest.

With this i bid aideu,

All the best & See you soon!

The determining factor for our project depends on the days' performance.

The first few hours weren't that big of a deal. I definitely thought that we would do fine and had that beginning thought of "We've got this" which was easy for us as we've had a first trial run during Engineering Show.

The next couple of hours was when things get more nerve wrecking! Seeing our panelist walk around with a white sheet of paper scares me! You know when you've got it, but the nerves still get to you. Ya, it happened! I was really nervous and stuttered alot. But overall, I felt good! Things went better than expected and we managed to answer the questions the panelist had to ask.

All we have left is to pray for the best and hopefully we get the grades that we want!

All the best & See you soon!
